Creative China
The Free, Young and Daring- New Theatre from Mainland China Since 1997
Growing up amidst China¡¯s economic boom and its one-child
policy, this generation of artists is young and daring, free of
the collective memory of the country¡¯s political events. They
detest the mundane and are proud of being different. Unfettered
by the mainstream theatre¡¯s demands for commercial success, they
depict life in China in a language rarely employed before now in
Chinese theatre. ¡±Fringe Shanghai¡± is delighted to work with the Hong Kong Fringe Club to present recent works by five groups that emerged after 1997 in Shandong, Guangxi, Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai. They believe in a dialogue between the mainstream and the avant-garde, and they choose to work outside of the mainstream to establish a relatively independent environment for their creations.
