Fringe Shanghai - Home of Cutting Edge Arts

 About ¡°Fringe¡±

The world¡¯s first Fringe Festival was conceived in 1947 as a cutting-edge off-shoot of the Edinburgh International Arts Festival. Although thought of initially as an alternative, fringe festivals have, over the years, come to embrace much more. ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± shares all of the positive attributes of this cultural phenomenon, emphasizing a spirit of comprehensiveness, dynamism, innovation, experimentation and entertainment.

 About ¡°Fringe Shanghai 2006¡±

The staging of ¡°Fringe Shanghai 2006¡± for the first time between 28 October and 12 November 2006 signified the formal introduction into China of the fringe concept, already well developed and ardently received in over 70 of the world¡¯s most important metropolises. For 16 days, Shanghai was treated to a feast of innovative, avant-garde shows and activities, including cutting-edge theater, dance, music, multi-media and visual art programs, many of which were China premieres, as well as workshops, meet-the-artists, and a 2-day symposium.

"Fringe Shanghai" is not only an open stage for showcasing the works of young, up-and-coming artists, it is also a vehicle for providing practical training to young arts administrators and technicians in China. With its strong networks and good relationships with international cultural circles, the management of ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± makes it its mission to create opportunities for young local arts practitioners to gain international experience by participating in arts conferences and festivals abroad.

 ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± in 2007 to Early 2008

Although a 2-week festival was not organized in 2007, the ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± team worked equally hard during the year, devoting time and resources to organizing and supporting a variety of avant-garde or non-mainstream projects. For example, the team provided marketing, ticketing and administration support to the China debut of the Iceland Dance Company, a top European dance company, in Shanghai in April. In September and October, at about the same time that Shanghai held the Special Olympics, ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± organized a series of events called ¡°Equal ARTpportunities¡± to showcase works by mentally and physically challenged artists. In November, ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± presented a series of dramatic works by two outstanding Hong Kong theater groups during the 2007 Asian Contemporary Theatre Festival organized by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre.

An important objective of ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± is to assist up-and-coming local artists in participating in fringe festivals around the world£¬enabling them to gain more international experience and exposure. In January 2008, ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± recommended 5 outstanding young experimental arts groups in Mainland China to take part in the 2008 City Festival organized annually by the Hong Kong Fringe Club.

The second 2-week ¡°Fringe Shanghai¡± is scheduled to take place from 12 November to 7 December 2008. We look forward to seeing you in our activities!
