About “Fringe Shanghai”

“Fringe Shanghai” is a vibrant annual arts event celebrating and supporting the innovative and visionary works of up-and-coming artists. This year's event marks the first such Fringe experience for Shanghai, opening a window to the premiere of international avant-garde arts. More than just a range of performances, “Fringe Shanghai” helps to lay the foundation for the development of a vibrant arts scene which will grow hand-in-hand with Shanghai's bustling economic environment.

With more than 20 international and local groups offering close to 100 performances, “Fringe Shanghai 2006” is set to bring cutting-edge arts to life in Shanghai.

Artists are brave people who are always willing to challenge themselves in their creative endeavors. Yet for a long time, avant-garde arts have had difficulty in getting public understanding and acceptance. Now a group of professional arts administrators are willing to meet the challenge by setting up a platform for both local and overseas artists in Shanghai to bring audiences the positive, healthy, and creative face of avant-garde arts. As one of the Honorary Advisors of “Fringe Shanghai 2006”, I am very glad to witness the birth of this exciting event. As an arts practitioner in Shanghai, I wish the first “Fringe Shanghai” every success!
