Symposium

New Trends, New Opportunities

The Fringe Symposium is a series of professionally-related panel discussions. The goal of our sessions is to blend together the expertise and vision of local and international artists, administrators and academics in a series of discussions about new developments in the Chinese cultural scene. What can the ¡°alternative¡± offer to our mutual benefit

How Sharp is China's Cutting Edge?

Key representatives from the fields of drama, dance, music and the visual arts are invited to communally offer-up a new definition of ¡°cutting-edge¡± as applied to the arts in China. How can potential arts resources, such as the media, be utilized in the education of the artist and the audience? How can bridges be constructed between the emerging artist and the mainstream?

Co-Moderators:
James Mitchell, Consul, Canadian Consulate in Shanghai
Nick Yu, Director of Programming & Marketing, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre

The Basis for Growth: Global Opportunities for Developing Artists

Fringe Shanghai is just one of a myriad of artistic organizations around the globe that can be utilized by budding arts entrepreneurs to hone their craft. Paul Gudgin, Director of The Edinburgh Fringe Festival (the world's largest open arts platform), and a prestigious group of arts managers discuss prospects for the Chinese artist in the world market. How can new artistic products be brought to new markets? The session will concentrate on successful arts prototypes to help point the way to the future.

Moderator:
Prof. Tseng Sun-man, Head of Arts Administration Department, Shanghai Conservatory of Music

Workshops

¡°The One Minutes¡± Exchange Workshop

So you like taking your DV everywhere and shooting anything you like? What if you are required to tell a whole story, explain a concept or describe an idea within exactly one minute? ¡°The One Minutes Awards¡± shows how other people on the planet present their views of this fascinating world in exactly 60 seconds.

It all started in 1998, when Holland's Sandberg Institute, an art academy, purchased one hour of television broadcasting time for its students. Students then told their stories on video, each lasting one minute. Seven years later, ¡°The One Minutes Awards¡± has become an international event, with participating filmmakers in some 60 countries and a database of 9000 ¡°one minutes¡±.

The One Minutes Foundation joined hands with BizArt Art Center and Prof Lothar Spree of the Media Art Department of Shanghai's Tongji University in organizing The One Minutes Exchange Workshop. The one minute works of 12 countries also had been screened during this private event.

IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP ¨C Zone of Silence
Workshop leader: Paul Lampert

Distinguished Toronto-based professor/director Paul Lampert offers a series of exercises designed to stimulate the actor's imagination and hone improvisational stage skills. All activities involve moments based on real life situations when natural silence rules£ºsuch as when individuals who do not know each other find themselves occupying the same space. Participants are meant to fully explore the dramatic possibilities of such moments of silence before the introduction of the spoken word.

MASTER CLASS IN CHARACTER MASK
Workshop leader: Perry Schneiderman

This workshop will provide an intensive exploration into the basic principles of characterization through Mask, including movement, voice and improvisation. The objective is to discover the potential of vocal and physical character range beyond the restrictions of the personal as defined by naturalism. The work is improvisational with a significant period of individual work facing full length mirrors before moving into the space.
